Despite leading Punjab Kings (PBKS) to an impressive win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), skipper Shreyas Iyer has been fined ₹12 lakh by the BCCI for maintaining a slow over-rate during Match 49 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
The match, held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday, saw PBKS chase down a challenging 191-run target in 19.4 overs. However, Iyer’s side was penalized for not completing their overs within the stipulated time frame, triggering a penalty under IPL’s Code of Conduct.
“Shreyas Iyer, Captain, Punjab Kings, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 49 of the IPL 2025 against Chennai Super Kings. As this was the team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct (minimum over-rate offences), Iyer was fined INR 12 lakh,” the BCCI stated in an official release.
PBKS were also forced to bring an additional fielder inside the 30-yard circle before the 19th over, as per IPL’s slow over-rate rules. Despite the setback, the team’s bowlers held their nerve, with Yuzvendra Chahal stealing the spotlight with a remarkable hat-trick.
Match Highlights
Shreyas Iyer played a captain’s knock, scoring 72 off 41 deliveries (5 fours, 4 sixes), anchoring the chase alongside opener Prabhsimran Singh, who chipped in with a brisk 54 off 36 balls. Together, they helped PBKS successfully chase CSK’s total with two balls to spare.
Earlier, CSK posted a solid 190 thanks to a blistering 88 from Sam Curran (47b, 9x4, 4x6) and a handy 32 from Dewald Brevis. However, their innings was rocked by Chahal’s spin masterclass, as he claimed four wickets for 32 runs, including a hat-trick. Pacer Marco Jansen also contributed with two wickets for PBKS.
Despite the over-rate penalty, it was a satisfying outing for Punjab Kings, who walked away with a four-wicket win and plenty of positives.
