In a move aimed at ensuring clean drinking water is easily accessible to the public, the Tamil Nadu government is set to install 50 automated water vending machines across various parts of Chennai.

The initiative, designed to support urban infrastructure and promote health through clean water access, is expected to be inaugurated soon by Chief Minister MK Stalin. These units will be strategically placed in high-footfall zones including bus stands, railway stations, markets, and public parks.
The machines will provide filtered drinking water at an affordable rate, catering especially to those who rely on public spaces for daily needs. Officials from the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) confirmed that the project aligns with the state’s commitment to water accessibility and hygiene.
This move is part of a broader strategy to modernize basic amenities in the city, reduce dependence on plastic water bottles, and ensure round-the-clock availability of safe drinking water to commuters, laborers, and the general public.
With the first phase focusing on 50 units, officials hinted that the number may be expanded based on public response and area-specific demands.
The project also reflects the state’s push toward sustainable and tech-integrated urban development.
