In a strong reaffirmation of alliance unity, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K Selvaperunthagai declared that the INDIA bloc remains intact, unwavering, and resilient in Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that not “a single brick” could be removed from the coalition, positioning it as a bulwark against rising fascist tendencies in the country.
A Democratic Front Gaining Traction
Speaking at the party’s unorganised workers’ wing conference held at Sathyamoorthi Bhavan, Selvaperunthagai described the INDIA bloc as a democratic alliance formed to protect the people and preserve constitutional values. The bloc, comprising several key opposition parties, has also garnered interest from other regional outfits seeking to join its ranks.
“Many parties have expressed a desire to be part of this people-centric alliance,” he said, highlighting its growing relevance as an alternative to the ruling BJP-led coalition at the Centre.
MK Stalin Holds the Reins in Tamil Nadu
Reiterating the alliance’s leadership structure in the state, Selvaperunthagai asserted that only Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, as the recognized leader of the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu, has the authority to decide on alliance compositions or changes.
This statement was made in light of his earlier welcoming remarks towards the DMDK, sparking questions about new entrants into the bloc. Clarifying the situation, he affirmed that any final decisions on alliance partners would rest with Stalin.
Seat-Sharing and Congress’s Stance
Addressing questions on seat-sharing—particularly in response to VCK’s call for a larger share in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections—Selvaperunthagai acknowledged that every regional party has the right to make demands. However, he stressed that the Congress Party, being a national entity, would consult with the All India Congress Committee (AICC) before finalizing any agreements.
“In fact,” he remarked with a touch of humour, “even if all 234 seats were offered to us, we would gladly accept them.”
A Clear Message of Unity
Selvaperunthagai’s remarks send a clear message to voters and political observers: the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu is not only stable but also growing in influence. With the 2026 Assembly elections on the horizon, the Congress leader’s speech positions the alliance as a formidable force built on coordination, inclusivity, and a shared vision for the state’s future.
