In a stunning turn of events, a high-ranking Tamil Nadu police officer has been suspended in connection with a kidnapping case that has gripped the state’s political and law enforcement circles. The accused officer, HM Jayaram, who held the position of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), was detained following a directive from the Madras High Court.
The case revolves around a family dispute over an inter-caste love marriage, which allegedly spiraled into criminal activity involving politicians, police personnel, and private individuals.
Background: A Marriage That Sparked Chaos
The controversy began when a young man decided to marry his girlfriend against the wishes of her family. Unable to locate the couple, the girl’s father, Vanaraja, allegedly enlisted the help of Maheshwari, a former constable. She then reportedly approached ADGP Jayaram for assistance. The officer, in turn, allegedly reached out to MLA Poovai Jagan Moorthy, head of the Puratchi Bharatham Party and sitting legislator from Kilvaithinakuppam, who was elected on the AIADMK symbol in 2021.
When efforts to locate the couple failed, the focus allegedly shifted to the groom’s family. Shockingly, the groom’s 16-year-old brother was kidnapped instead.
A Vehicle Linked to the Top Cop
The kidnapped teenager was later released after his mother filed a police complaint. During the investigation, it emerged that the boy was allegedly taken in a car registered to ADGP Jayaram. The vehicle was reportedly driven by a serving police constable, with Maheshwari and Vanaraja accompanying them.
The involvement of such high-profile figures has raised serious concerns about the misuse of power and the collapse of institutional integrity. Investigators have also pointed to large financial transactions related to the case, prompting suspicions of a deeper conspiracy.
Court's Stern Rebuke to the MLA
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court issued a clear warning to MLA Poovai Jagan Moorthy, directing him to cooperate fully with the investigation and to avoid appearing with supporters. The court noted that his supporters had physically obstructed police when they attempted to question him in Tiruvallur district.
In a scathing remark, the court said:
“Why are you afraid of a police investigation? An MLA should be a role model, not run kangaroo courts.”
The legislator has filed for anticipatory bail, but the court said it would assess his level of cooperation before ruling on the plea.
Suspension and Ongoing Probe
Following mounting pressure, HM Jayaram was officially suspended pending further inquiry. So far, five arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Authorities are also probing a potential money trail, suggesting the operation may have involved significant planning and financial backing.
The Tamil Nadu police have assured the public that no one will be spared, regardless of their political or professional status.
Conclusion
This high-profile case has triggered widespread public outrage and brought to light the troubling intersection of politics, law enforcement, and personal vendettas in Tamil Nadu. As the investigation unfolds, the state watches closely, demanding accountability from those entrusted with power.
Stay tuned for updates as the case continues to unravel.
