The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several regions across southern and western India, warning of extremely heavy rainfall expected in the next 24 hours. States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra are likely to witness intense downpours, prompting state authorities to initiate precautionary measures.


🔴 Regions Under Red Alert


The IMD's red alert signals extreme weather conditions in the following areas:

  • Coastal Karnataka: Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamagaluru, Udupi, Shivamogga, and Uttara Kannada districts.

  • Kerala: Isolated heavy rain is expected across various districts.

  • Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal: Coastal areas are under close watch for intense rainfall.

  • Goa: Several parts have already recorded significant rainfall, with Ponda (162 mm), Dharbandora (124.2 mm), and Margao (123.4 mm) being the most affected.

  • Maharashtra: Red alert for Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, while Satara and Kolhapur Ghat areas are also expected to receive extremely heavy rain.


🌧️ Monsoon Advancing Rapidly


The Southwest Monsoon has significantly advanced into:

  • More areas of the Arabian Sea

  • Karnataka and Goa

  • Parts of Maharashtra

  • Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland

The IMD states that conditions are favourable for the monsoon to move further into Mumbai, Bengaluru, Andhra Pradesh, and other northeastern states in the coming 3 days.


🚫 Precautionary Measures in Place


Goa:

  • All swimming activities in rivers and waterfalls have been banned.

  • Tourists may visit waterfalls only under forest department supervision, according to Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane.

  • Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea due to squally weather, with winds reaching 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph along the Goa and Konkan

    coasts.


Maharashtra:


  • Orange alert in Raigad, Pune, Kolhapur, and Satara

  • Mumbai under yellow alert, indicating potential for heavy showers without extreme disruption.
